Artist Info

Orchestra Dell'angelicum is a classical music ensemble that was founded in Milan, Italy in 1931. The ensemble was established by Father Agostino Gemelli, who was a Franciscan friar and a renowned physician. Father Gemelli was also a lover of classical music and he wanted to create an orchestra that would bring together talented musicians from all over Italy. The ensemble was named after the Angelicum, which is a prestigious university in Rome that was founded by the Dominicans. The name was chosen to reflect the ensemble's commitment to excellence and its dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and beauty. The Orchestra Dell'angelicum has had many talented musicians over the years, but some of its most notable members include conductor Claudio Abbado, violinist Salvatore Accardo, and pianist Maurizio Pollini. These musicians have all had successful careers in their own right, but they have also made significant contributions to the ensemble's success. One of the highlights of the Orchestra Dell'angelicum's history was its performance at the 1955 Salzburg Festival. The ensemble was invited to perform Mozart's Requiem under the direction of conductor Herbert von Karajan. The performance was a huge success and it helped to establish the ensemble's reputation as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. Over the years, the Orchestra Dell'angelicum has won many awards and accolades for its performances. In 1962, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The ensemble has also been awarded the Premio Abbiati, which is one of the most prestigious awards in Italian classical music. In addition to its performances in Italy, the Orchestra Dell'angelicum has also toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States. The ensemble has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Despite its many successes, the Orchestra Dell'angelicum has also faced its share of challenges over the years. In the 1980s, the ensemble faced financial difficulties and was forced to disband for a period of time. However, the ensemble was eventually able to regroup and continue its tradition of excellence. Today, the Orchestra Dell'angelicum continues to be one of the most respected and admired classical music ensembles in the world. The ensemble's commitment to excellence and its dedication to the pursuit of beauty and knowledge continue to inspire musicians and audiences alike.
