Joe Anderer was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional trumpet player and his mother a classical pianist. From a young age, Anderer was exposed to classical music and began playing the trumpet at the age of six. Anderer's talent was quickly recognized, and he began studying with renowned trumpet teachers in New York City. He attended the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division, where he studied with Mark Gould, the former principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Anderer continued his studies at the Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree in 2007. During his time at Juilliard, Anderer was a member of the Juilliard Orchestra and the New Juilliard Ensemble. He also performed with the New York Philharmonic as a substitute trumpet player. Anderer's talent and hard work paid off when he won the Juilliard Concerto Competition in 2006, which led to his solo debut with the Juilliard Orchestra. After graduating from Juilliard, Anderer continued his studies at the Yale School of Music, where he earned his Master of Music degree in 2009. While at Yale, Anderer was a member of the Yale Philharmonia and the Yale Brass Trio. He also won the Yale School of Music Concerto Competition, which led to his solo debut with the Yale Philharmonia. Anderer's career as a professional trumpet player began to take off after he graduated from Yale. He became a member of the New York City Ballet Orchestra in 2009 and has been a member ever since. He has also performed with other major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as an orchestral musician, Anderer is also an active chamber musician. He is a member of the American Brass Quintet, one of the world's leading brass ensembles. With the American Brass Quintet, Anderer has performed at major venues and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Edinburgh International Festival. Anderer's talent and hard work have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In addition to his wins at the Juilliard and Yale concerto competitions, he was a finalist in the National Trumpet Competition in 2006 and 2007. He was also a recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2015, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise for a significant career in classical music. One of the highlights of Anderer's career was his performance of the trumpet solo in John Adams' "City Noir" with the New York Philharmonic in 2014. The performance was highly praised by critics, with The New York Times calling Anderer's playing "brilliant" and "dazzling." Anderer is also a dedicated teacher and has taught at several institutions, including the Juilliard School, the Yale School of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music. He is currently on the faculty of the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. In addition to his work as a musician and teacher, Anderer is also a composer and arranger.
