Laura Metcalf is a renowned cellist and chamber musician who has made a name for herself in the classical music world. Born in 1983 in New York City, Metcalf grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. Her mother was a pianist and her father was a composer, so it was only natural that she would develop a love for music. Metcalf began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a talent for the instrument. She studied with renowned cellists such as Timothy Eddy and Joel Krosnick, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School and a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. Throughout her career, Metcalf has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world. She has been a member of the acclaimed string quartet Sybarite5 since 2008, and has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, among others. One of the highlights of Metcalf's career was her performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards, where she played with the Silk Road Ensemble, a group founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The ensemble won the Grammy for Best World Music Album that year, and Metcalf was thrilled to be a part of such a prestigious event. In addition to her work as a performer, Metcalf is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught at the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division and the Mannes School of Music, and has given masterclasses at universities and conservatories around the world. Metcalf has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 2011, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a major career in music. She has also been a recipient of the Juilliard School's Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music, and the Yale School of Music's Alumni Association Prize.
