Role:ComposerBirth:1601Death:1694Genre:KeyboardOrchestralDelphin Strungk was a German composer and organist who lived during the Baroque period. He was born in 1600 in the city of Schwerin, which was then part of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. His father, Nicolaus Strungk, was also a musician and served as the court organist in Schwerin. Delphin Strungk began his musical education under the tutelage of his father, who taught him to play the organ and the harpsichord. He also received instruction in composition and music theory. In 1620, he moved to Hamburg to study with the renowned organist and composer Heinrich Scheidemann. Scheidemann was a major figure in the North German organ school, which was known for its virtuosic and improvisatory style. After completing his studies with Scheidemann, Strungk returned to Schwerin and took up a position as court organist. He also served as the music director for the city's churches. In 1631, he moved to the city of Lübeck, where he became the organist at the Marienkirche. Lübeck was a major center of music during the Baroque period, and Strungk was able to work alongside some of the most important composers of the time, including Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Sebastian Bach. Strungk's compositional output was relatively small, but he was known for his skillful use of counterpoint and his ability to create complex and intricate textures. His works include a number of organ pieces, as well as vocal music and instrumental chamber music. One of his most famous works is the "Praeludium in D minor," which is a virtuosic organ piece that showcases his technical prowess. In addition to his work as a composer and organist, Strungk was also involved in the production of music manuscripts. He was responsible for copying and editing a number of important works by other composers, including Scheidemann and Buxtehude. His manuscripts are known for their meticulous attention to detail and their beautiful calligraphy. Despite his relatively low profile as a composer, Strungk was highly respected by his contemporaries. He was known for his musical skill and his dedication to his craft. He died in Lübeck in 1694, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful and intricate music that continues to be appreciated by musicians and audiences today.More....
