José Muñoz Molleda was a Spanish composer born on January 22, 1905, in the city of Oviedo, Asturias. He was the son of a music teacher, and his father's influence played a significant role in his early musical education. Muñoz Molleda began studying music at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already composed several pieces. In 1923, Muñoz Molleda moved to Madrid to continue his musical studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music. There, he studied composition with Conrado del Campo and Joaquín Rodrigo, among others. He also studied piano and conducting, and he became an accomplished pianist and conductor. After completing his studies, Muñoz Molleda began working as a music teacher and conductor. He also continued to compose, and his works began to gain recognition. In 1931, he won the National Prize for Music for his composition "Suite Asturiana," which was inspired by the folk music of his native Asturias. Throughout the 1930s, Muñoz Molleda continued to compose and conduct. He also became involved in the Spanish Republican government, serving as the director of the National Music Conservatory in Madrid. However, with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Muñoz Molleda's life was upended. He was forced to flee Madrid and go into hiding, as he was a known supporter of the Republican government. After the war, Muñoz Molleda returned to Madrid and resumed his musical career. He continued to compose and conduct, and he also became a professor of composition at the Royal Conservatory of Music. In 1950, he won the National Prize for Music again, this time for his composition "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra." Muñoz Molleda's music is characterized by its lyricism and its use of Spanish folk music. He was particularly interested in the music of his native Asturias, and many of his compositions incorporate elements of Asturian folk music. He also drew inspiration from other Spanish folk traditions, as well as from classical music. Some of Muñoz Molleda's most notable works include his "Suite Asturiana," "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," and "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra." He also composed several operas, including "La Casa de Tócame Roque" and "La Casa de los Cuervos." Muñoz Molleda's music was well-received during his lifetime, and he was recognized as one of Spain's leading composers. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and he received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Spanish music. José Muñoz Molleda died on December 23, 1961, in Madrid. He left behind a legacy of beautiful and innovative music that continues to be celebrated today. His compositions are still performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, and his influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary Spanish composers.
