Capital Chamber Choir is a Canadian classical music ensemble that was founded in 2010 by conductor Jamie Loback. The choir is based in Ottawa, Ontario, and is made up of 24 professional singers who are dedicated to performing a wide range of choral music from different eras and styles. The birth of Capital Chamber Choir can be traced back to Loback's desire to create a professional-level choir in Ottawa that would be dedicated to performing challenging and diverse repertoire. Loback, who is a graduate of the University of Ottawa's music program, had previously conducted several choirs in the Ottawa area and had gained a reputation as a skilled and passionate choral conductor. In 2010, Loback founded Capital Chamber Choir and held auditions for singers who were interested in joining the ensemble. The choir's first concert was held in December of that year and featured a program of Christmas music. The concert was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and it marked the beginning of a successful and dynamic career for the choir. Since its founding, Capital Chamber Choir has performed a wide range of choral music from different eras and styles, including Renaissance motets, Baroque cantatas, Romantic choral works, and contemporary compositions. The choir has collaborated with a number of other musical organizations in the Ottawa area, including the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and the Ottawa Bach Choir. One of the highlights of Capital Chamber Choir's career was its performance of Bach's Mass in B Minor in 2013. The choir performed the work with the Ottawa Bach Choir and the National Arts Centre Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Helmuth Rilling. The performance was widely praised for its precision, clarity, and emotional depth, and it cemented Capital Chamber Choir's reputation as one of the leading choral ensembles in Canada. In addition to its performances in Ottawa, Capital Chamber Choir has also toured to other parts of Canada and the United States. In 2016, the choir performed at the American Choral Directors Association conference in Boston, where it received a standing ovation from the audience. The choir has also performed at the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, the Ottawa Choral Society's Messiah Sing-Along, and the Ottawa Chamberfest. Capital Chamber Choir has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2014, the choir won the Healey Willan Grand Prize in the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs, which is awarded to the top amateur choir in Canada. The choir has also been nominated for several East Coast Music Awards for its recordings, including its 2017 album Seasons of Life and Landscape, which features works by Canadian composers. Throughout its career, Capital Chamber Choir has remained committed to promoting choral music and supporting emerging composers and performers. The choir has commissioned several new works by Canadian composers, including Mark Sirett, Matthew Emery, and Laura Hawley. The choir has also collaborated with young singers and conductors through its mentorship program, which provides opportunities for emerging artists to work with and learn from the choir's professional singers and conductor.
