He was the son of a classical pianist and began playing the piano at a young age. Gaslini studied at the Milan Conservatory and later at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, where he graduated with a degree in composition. Gaslini's early career was focused on jazz, and he played with some of the most prominent jazz musicians of the time, including Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, and Gerry Mulligan. He also formed his own jazz quartet, which performed extensively throughout Europe. In the 1960s, Gaslini began to shift his focus to classical music, and he composed a number of works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His compositions were often experimental and incorporated elements of jazz, avant-garde, and traditional classical music. One of Gaslini's most significant works is his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, which he composed in 1975. The piece is a fusion of jazz and classical music and features a virtuosic piano part that showcases Gaslini's skills as a pianist. The concerto has been performed by many of the world's leading orchestras and pianists. Gaslini also composed a number of film scores, including the soundtrack for Michelangelo Antonioni's film La notte. His film music was often experimental and incorporated elements of jazz and avant-garde music. In addition to his work as a composer, Gaslini was also a respected conductor and music educator. He founded the Giorgio Gaslini International Jazz Festival in 1975, which became one of the most important jazz festivals in Europe. Gaslini continued to compose and perform music until his death on July 29, 2014, in Borgo Val di Taro, Italy. He left behind a legacy as one of Italy's most important composers and musicians, whose work bridged the worlds of jazz and classical music.More....
