Role:EnsembleThe Australian Trio is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences around the world for over three decades. The trio was founded in 1988 by three talented musicians: violinist Helen Ayres, cellist Julian Smiles, and pianist Kathryn Selby. The ensemble has since become one of the most renowned chamber music groups in Australia, known for their exceptional musicianship and dynamic performances. Helen Ayres, Julian Smiles, and Kathryn Selby all had successful solo careers before coming together to form the Australian Trio. Ayres had studied at the Royal College of Music in London and had performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Smiles had studied at the Juilliard School in New York and had performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Australian String Quartet. Selby had studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and had performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The three musicians first met in 1985 when they were all members of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music and began performing together as a trio. In 1988, they officially formed the Australian Trio and made their debut performance at the Sydney Opera House. Since then, the Australian Trio has performed extensively throughout Australia and around the world. They have performed at major music festivals such as the Edinburgh Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. They have also performed in prestigious concert halls such as the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Lincoln Center in New York. The Australian Trio has recorded numerous albums, including works by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Schubert. Their recordings have received critical acclaim and have won several awards, including an ARIA Award for Best Classical Album. One of the highlights of the Australian Trio's career was their performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. They were chosen to perform at the opening ceremony, which was watched by millions of people around the world. They performed a piece by Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe, which was specially commissioned for the occasion. Another notable performance by the Australian Trio was their collaboration with the Australian Ballet. They performed live on stage with the ballet company, accompanying the dancers with music by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev. The performance was a huge success and was praised by critics and audiences alike. The Australian Trio has also been recognized for their contributions to the arts. They were awarded the Order of Australia in 2010 for their services to music. They have also been appointed as ambassadors for the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Musica Viva Australia Foundation. In addition to their performances, the Australian Trio is also committed to music education. They regularly conduct masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and they have established the Selby & Friends Foundation, which supports emerging artists and promotes chamber music in Australia. In conclusion, the Australian Trio is a world-class classical music ensemble that has made a significant contribution to the Australian music scene and to the world of chamber music.More....
