Role:ComposerPeriod:ModernGenre:Avant-GardeChamberChoralKeyboardJan Jirasek was a Czech classical music composer born on January 1, 1955, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor in the Czech Republic. Jirasek began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father. He later attended the Prague Conservatory, where he studied composition with Vaclav Dobiáš and conducting with Karel Ančerl. Jirasek's early works were heavily influenced by the music of his father, as well as the Czech classical music tradition. His first major composition, a symphony for orchestra, was premiered in 1978 and received critical acclaim. This success led to commissions for other works, including a ballet and an opera. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Jirasek continued to compose works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His music was characterized by its lyricism, rich harmonies, and use of traditional Czech folk melodies. He was also known for his use of unconventional instrumentation, such as the glass harmonica and the theremin. One of Jirasek's most famous works is his Symphony No. 2, which was premiered in 1992. The symphony is a tribute to the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, and features themes and motifs from Dvořák's music. The work is notable for its use of a large orchestra, including a full percussion section and a choir. Jirasek's other notable works include his Piano Concerto, which was premiered in 1985 and features a virtuosic solo part, and his String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered in 1990 and is characterized by its use of folk melodies and intricate counterpoint. In addition to his work as a composer, Jirasek was also a respected conductor. He served as the principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra from 1992 to 1996, and also conducted many other orchestras throughout Europe and the United States. Jirasek's music has been performed by many of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, and he has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. He died on December 31, 2010, in Prague, Czech Republic, at the age of 55.More....
