She was born on July 11, 1949, in London, England, to a Canadian mother and an English father. Her family moved to Canada when she was eight years old, and she grew up in Toronto. Boyd began playing the guitar at the age of 13, and by the time she was 16, she was studying with Eli Kassner, a well-known Canadian guitarist and teacher. She went on to study at the University of Toronto and the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1975, Boyd released her first album, "The Guitar," which was a collection of classical guitar pieces. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Boyd as one of the leading classical guitarists of her generation. Over the years, Boyd has released more than 20 albums, including "Persona," "The Romantic Guitar of Liona Boyd," and "Camino Latino." She has also composed a number of pieces for the guitar, including "Fantasy on Greensleeves," "L'oiseau triste," and "The First Lady Suite." Boyd has performed all over the world, including in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. She has played with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Pops Orchestra. In addition to her music career, Boyd is also an author and a philanthropist. She has written several books, including "In My Own Key: My Life in Love and Music" and "No Remedy for Love." She is also the founder of the Guitar Girls Foundation, which provides guitars and music lessons to underprivileged girls. Boyd has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honor in Canada.
