Radio Chamber Orchestra (RCO) is a classical music ensemble based in Bucharest, Romania. The orchestra was founded in 1952 by the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company, with the aim of promoting classical music and supporting young musicians. The RCO has had several conductors over the years, including Constantin Silvestri, Cristian Mandeal, and Horia Andreescu. The current conductor is Cornel Ţăranu, who has been with the orchestra since 2015. The RCO has a core group of around 40 musicians, but it often collaborates with guest soloists and conductors. The orchestra has a wide repertoire, ranging from Baroque to contemporary music, and it has premiered many works by Romanian composers. One of the highlights of the RCO's history was its participation in the 1955 International Festival of Contemporary Music in Venice, where it performed works by Romanian composers alongside other European ensembles. The RCO has also performed at many other international festivals, including the Prague Spring Festival, the Budapest Spring Festival, and the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest. The RCO has won several awards over the years, including the Grand Prize at the International Radio Festival in Venice in 1968, and the Grand Prize at the International Festival of Contemporary Music in Bourges, France in 1972. The orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings, including a Grammy nomination for its recording of George Enescu's Symphony No. 3 in 2002. In addition to its concert performances, the RCO has also been active in promoting classical music through radio broadcasts and recordings. The orchestra has recorded over 100 albums, many of which feature works by Romanian composers. Despite facing financial challenges in recent years, the RCO has continued to be a leading ensemble in Romania and a respected presence on the international classical music scene. Its commitment to promoting Romanian composers and supporting young musicians has made it an important cultural institution in the country.
