Isidora Zebeljan was a Serbian composer born on October 16, 1967, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. She was born into a family of musicians, with her father being a composer and her mother a musicologist. Zebeljan began playing the piano at a young age and later studied composition at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade. Zebeljan's music is heavily influenced by Serbian folk music, which she often incorporates into her compositions. She is known for her unique style, which blends traditional Serbian music with contemporary classical music. Her works often feature unconventional instrumentation, such as the accordion, and she is known for her use of complex rhythms and harmonies. Zebeljan's career as a composer began in the 1990s, and she quickly gained recognition for her innovative style. In 1995, she won the prestigious Stevan Mokranjac Award for her composition "Three Miracles of St. George." This piece, which is based on a Serbian folk tale, features a unique blend of traditional Serbian music and contemporary classical music. Throughout her career, Zebeljan composed music for a variety of mediums, including opera, ballet, and film. One of her most notable works is the opera "Zora D," which premiered in 2003. The opera tells the story of a young woman who is forced to marry against her will and features a blend of traditional Serbian music and contemporary classical music. In addition to her work as a composer, Zebeljan was also a respected music educator. She taught composition at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade and was a visiting professor at several universities around the world. Zebeljan's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra. Her works have been featured at several international music festivals, including the Venice Biennale and the Salzburg Festival. Sadly, Isidora Zebeljan passed away on October 28, 2016, at the age of 49. Despite her relatively short career, she left a lasting impact on the world of classical music.
