Nancy Armstrong was born on May 12, 1955, in New York City. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Armstrong showed a natural talent for music and began studying the piano at the age of five. Armstrong's parents recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied under renowned pianist and teacher, Rosina Lhévinne. Armstrong's talent and dedication to her craft quickly became apparent, and she graduated with honors in 1976. After completing her studies, Armstrong began performing professionally, quickly gaining recognition for her exceptional talent. She made her debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1978, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a resounding success, and Armstrong was praised for her technical skill and musicality. Over the next few years, Armstrong continued to perform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She also began recording, releasing her first album, a collection of Chopin's piano works, in 1981. Throughout her career, Armstrong has been recognized for her exceptional talent and contributions to classical music. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the Avery Fisher Prize in 1983, the highest honor for American classical musicians. She was also inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 1998. One of Armstrong's most notable performances was her 1986 performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Berlin Philharmonic. The performance was recorded and released as an album, which went on to become one of the best-selling classical albums of all time. Armstrong's interpretation of the concerto was praised for its emotional depth and technical brilliance. In addition to her performances and recordings, Armstrong has also been a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. She has taught at the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music, among others. Many of her students have gone on to successful careers in classical music, and Armstrong is widely respected for her contributions to music education. Despite her many accomplishments, Armstrong remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform and record, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of her generation.
