He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. Ippolito began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the trumpet and guitar. Ippolito attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied composition with Richard Danielpour and Nils Vigeland. He later earned a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music, where he studied with Martin Bresnick and David Lang. One of Ippolito's most notable works is his 2012 composition "The Distance of the Moon," which was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic. The piece is based on the short story of the same name by Italo Calvino and tells the story of a group of people who travel to the moon on a ladder made of moonbeams.
