He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Sakata showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Sakata's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons and quickly became proficient in playing the instrument. At the age of 12, he won his first piano competition, which marked the beginning of his career as a classical music artist. Sakata continued to hone his skills as a pianist and studied under some of the most renowned music teachers in Japan. He also attended the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he received a degree in piano performance. After completing his studies, Sakata began performing in concerts and recitals across Japan. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and skilled pianist, and his performances were highly acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. In 1970, Sakata made his international debut at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, Russia. He was the first Japanese pianist to participate in the competition, and his performance was highly praised by the judges. Although he did not win the competition, his performance earned him international recognition and opened up new opportunities for him. Over the next few years, Sakata continued to perform in concerts and recitals across the world. He performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. In 1978, Sakata won the prestigious Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. The competition was one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world, and winning it was a significant achievement for Sakata. His performance of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor was highly praised by the judges, and he was awarded the first prize. Following his win at the Chopin International Piano Competition, Sakata's career continued to flourish. He was invited to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Sakata was also a prolific recording artist and recorded numerous albums throughout his career. His recordings of Chopin's piano works were particularly acclaimed, and he was regarded as one of the leading interpreters of Chopin's music. In addition to his performances and recordings, Sakata was also a respected music educator.
