He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor and composer. From a young age, Karjinsky showed a great interest in music, and his father recognized his talent and began to teach him music theory and composition. Karjinsky's early years were spent studying music at the Moscow Conservatory, where he was a student of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. He was a gifted student and quickly became known for his talent as a composer. His early works were heavily influenced by the Russian folk music tradition, and he was particularly interested in the use of traditional Russian instruments in his compositions. In 1901, Karjinsky completed his first major work, a symphony entitled "In the Steppes." The piece was well-received by critics and established Karjinsky as a major figure in the Russian classical music scene. Over the next few years, he continued to compose a series of successful works, including several operas and ballets. One of Karjinsky's most famous works is his ballet "The Firebird," which was first performed in 1910. The ballet was a collaboration with the famous choreographer Michel Fokine and was based on a Russian folk tale. The piece was an instant success and is still performed regularly by ballet companies around the world. Karjinsky's music was known for its lush orchestration and use of traditional Russian melodies and rhythms. He was also interested in incorporating elements of other musical traditions into his compositions, including Eastern European folk music and the music of the Far East. In addition to his work as a composer, Karjinsky was also a respected conductor. He served as the conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow from 1917 to 1922 and was later the conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra.
