Croft's early works were heavily influenced by the music of Olivier Messiaen, and he was particularly interested in the use of complex rhythms and harmonies. His first major work, "Piano Sonata," was written in 1993 and was performed at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. The piece was well-received and helped to establish Croft as a promising young composer. In the years that followed, Croft continued to compose works that were characterized by their complexity and sophistication.
