Thomas Ospital is a French classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a virtuoso organist, improviser, and composer. Born on January 25, 1990, in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, a suburb of Paris, Ospital showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later discovered the organ and was immediately drawn to its rich and powerful sound. Ospital's talent was quickly recognized, and he began studying at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Saint-Maur-des-Fossés at the age of ten. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he earned a degree in organ performance with honors in 2012. During his time at the conservatory, Ospital studied with renowned organists such as Olivier Latry, Michel Bouvard, and Thierry Escaich. Ospital's career as a professional musician began while he was still a student. In 2009, he won first prize at the International Competition of Organ Interpretation in Biarritz, France. This was followed by a series of other awards and honors, including the Grand Prix d'Interprétation at the International Organ Competition in Chartres in 2012 and the Prix du Public at the International Organ Competition in Toulouse in 2014. Ospital's reputation as a virtuoso organist continued to grow, and he began to receive invitations to perform at major venues and festivals around the world. In 2015, he was appointed as the organist-in-residence at the Maison de la Radio in Paris, where he performed regularly on the historic Cavaillé-Coll organ. He has also performed at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. In addition to his work as a performer, Ospital is also an accomplished composer and improviser. He has written several works for organ, including a suite for organ and percussion that was premiered at the Festival International d'Orgue de Chartres in 2016. He is also known for his improvisations, which he often incorporates into his performances. His improvisations have been praised for their creativity, virtuosity, and ability to connect with audiences. One of Ospital's most notable performances took place in 2016 at the inauguration of the new organ at the Philharmonie de Paris. Ospital was one of several organists who performed at the event, which was broadcast live on television and radio. His performance of his own composition, "Instants éphémères," was particularly well-received and showcased his virtuosity and creativity as a composer and performer. Ospital's discography includes several recordings of works by composers such as Bach, Franck, and Messiaen, as well as his own compositions and improvisations. His recording of Messiaen's "La Nativité du Seigneur" was released in 2017 to critical acclaim and was named one of the best classical recordings of the year by several publications. In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Ospital is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses and workshops at several institutions, including the Royal College of Music in London and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He is also a professor of organ at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Toulouse. Overall, Thomas Ospital is a talented and versatile musician who has made a significant impact on the world of classical music.
