Matthew Welch is a renowned composer, performer, and educator in the field of contemporary classical music. Born in 1976 in Eugene, Oregon, Welch grew up in a musical family and began playing the saxophone at the age of nine. He went on to study music at Wesleyan University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1998, and at the University of California, San Diego, where he received a Master of Arts degree in 2001. Throughout his career, Welch has been recognized for his innovative approach to music composition and performance. He has received numerous awards and grants, including the Aaron Copland Award, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and the American Composers Forum Subito Grant. In addition, he has been commissioned by a variety of organizations, including the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the Kronos Quartet, and the American Composers Orchestra. One of Welch's most notable works is his opera "And Here We Are," which premiered in 2015 at the Prototype Festival in New York City. The opera, which was inspired by Welch's experiences living in Thailand, explores themes of identity, culture, and globalization. It features a unique blend of Western and Eastern musical traditions, including Thai classical music, jazz, and contemporary classical music. In addition to his work as a composer, Welch is also an accomplished performer.
