Born on December 5, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois, Novak grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. Novak's parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Novak started playing drums when he was just four years old. He was initially self-taught, but his parents later enrolled him in drum lessons.
