The ensemble is named after Holywell Street, which is located near the academy and is known for its many music shops. The founding members of the Holywell Ensemble were Simon Blendis (violin), Robert Smissen (viola), Jennifer Brown (cello), Andrew Watkinson (violin), and Kate Gould (cello). All five musicians were accomplished performers who had already gained recognition for their individual talents. They came together to form the Holywell Ensemble with the goal of exploring the rich repertoire of chamber music and bringing it to audiences around the world. The Holywell Ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional musicianship and dynamic performances. The ensemble's members were all highly skilled musicians who were able to bring out the best in each other's playing. They were also known for their innovative programming, which often included lesser-known works alongside more familiar pieces. Over the years, the Holywell Ensemble has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals. Some of the ensemble's most notable performances include appearances at the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Lincoln Center in New York. The ensemble has also been featured on numerous radio and television broadcasts, including BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. In addition to its live performances, the Holywell Ensemble has also recorded several albums. The ensemble's debut album, which was released in 1996, featured works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. The album was well-received by critics and helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading chamber music groups of its time. Over the years, the membership of the Holywell Ensemble has changed as some members have left to pursue other opportunities and new members have joined. However, the ensemble has always maintained its commitment to excellence and its dedication to exploring the rich and varied repertoire of chamber music. Today, the Holywell Ensemble is made up of Simon Blendis (violin), James Boyd (viola), Jennifer Brown (cello), and Daniel Tong (piano). All four musicians are highly respected performers who have won numerous awards and accolades for their individual talents. One of the highlights of the Holywell Ensemble's career was its performance at the 2002 BBC Proms. The ensemble performed a program of works by Schubert, Brahms, and Dvorak to a packed audience at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and was widely praised for its energy, passion, and technical skill. In addition to its live performances, the Holywell Ensemble has also won several awards for its recordings. The ensemble's 2005 album, which featured works by Schumann and Brahms, won the prestigious Gramophone Award for Chamber Music. The album was praised for its "exquisite playing" and "deeply felt interpretations." Throughout its history, the Holywell Ensemble has remained committed to its mission of exploring the rich and varied repertoire of chamber music. The ensemble's members have always been dedicated to bringing this music to audiences around the world and to sharing their passion for this art form with others.More....
