The ensemble is made up of students, faculty, and community members who share a passion for wind music. The ensemble has become one of the most respected wind ensembles in Canada, and has performed at numerous prestigious events and venues. The founding of the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble can be traced back to the early 1970s, when a group of music students at the University of Calgary decided to form a wind ensemble. The group was initially led by Dr. John Payzant, who was the director of the university's music program at the time. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and began performing at local events and concerts. Over the years, the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble has had many talented members, including some of the most accomplished wind musicians in Canada. Some of the ensemble's most notable members have included Dr. Jeremy Brown, who is a renowned clarinetist and conductor, and Dr. Mark Hopkins, who is a highly respected composer and arranger. One of the highlights of the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble's history was its performance at the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary. The ensemble was selected to perform at the opening ceremonies of the games, and played a rousing rendition of the Canadian national anthem. The performance was widely praised, and helped to cement the ensemble's reputation as one of the best wind ensembles in Canada. Another major highlight of the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble's history was its performance at the 1996 World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) conference in Austria. The ensemble was one of only a handful of Canadian ensembles to be invited to perform at the conference, and its performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. In addition to its major performances, the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. The ensemble has won several national and international competitions, including the Canadian National Band Championships and the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference. The University of Calgary Wind Ensemble has also been recognized for its contributions to the development of wind music in Canada. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered numerous new works by Canadian composers, and has worked tirelessly to promote the importance of wind music in Canadian culture. Today, the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble continues to be one of the most respected wind ensembles in Canada.
