Aspasia Nasopoulou is a contemporary classical music composer who was born in Athens, Greece in 1972. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her father being a composer and her mother a pianist. Nasopoulou started playing the piano at a young age and later studied music theory and composition at the National Conservatory of Athens. After completing her studies in Athens, Nasopoulou moved to the Netherlands to pursue further education in music composition. She studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in composition. During her time in the Netherlands, Nasopoulou also attended various workshops and masterclasses with renowned composers such as Louis Andriessen, Brian Ferneyhough, and Magnus Lindberg. Nasopoulou's music is characterized by its unique blend of classical and contemporary elements, as well as its incorporation of various cultural influences. One of Nasopoulou's most notable works is her opera "The Portrait," which premiered in 2014 at the Dutch National Opera. The opera is based on the life of the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh and explores themes of creativity, mental illness, and the artist's relationship with his brother Theo. "The Portrait" received critical acclaim for its innovative use of multimedia elements, including video projections and live painting. Another significant work by Nasopoulou is her composition "The Embroidered X," which was commissioned by the Athens State Orchestra and premiered in 2017. The piece is inspired by the traditional Greek embroidery technique known as "xenaki," and features a solo violin accompanied by a large orchestra. "The Embroidered X" has been praised for its intricate and colorful orchestration, as well as its incorporation of Greek folk music elements. In addition to her work as a composer, Nasopoulou is also a lecturer and researcher in the field of music technology. She has taught at various institutions, including the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the University of Amsterdam.
