Roger Zare is a contemporary classical music composer who was born on August 17, 1985, in Sarasota, Florida. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional trumpet player and his mother a music teacher. Zare started playing the piano at the age of five and later learned to play the trumpet and the guitar. He was also interested in composing music from a young age and started writing his own pieces when he was just eight years old. Zare attended the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree in composition at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.
