Trish Clowes is a British saxophonist and composer who has made a name for herself in the world of contemporary classical music. Born in 1984 in Birmingham, England, Clowes grew up in a musical family and began playing the saxophone at the age of nine. She went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 2005 and a Master of Arts degree in 2007. Clowes' early musical influences included jazz legends such as John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, but she was also drawn to classical music and the works of composers such as Stravinsky and Bartok. This eclectic mix of influences can be heard in her own compositions, which often blend elements of jazz, classical, and contemporary music. One of Clowes' early successes as a composer was her piece "Tangent," which was commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra in 2008. The piece was well-received and helped to establish Clowes as a rising star in the classical music world. She went on to receive numerous commissions from other orchestras and ensembles, including the BBC Concert Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta. In addition to her work as a composer, Clowes is also an accomplished saxophonist and has performed with a number of jazz and classical ensembles. She has released several albums as a bandleader, including "And in the Night-Time She Is There" (2012) and "My Iris" (2017), both of which received critical acclaim. One of Clowes' most notable works as a composer is her piece "Pocket Compass," which was commissioned by the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2014. The piece is a tribute to the late British composer and conductor Sir John Tavener, and features a blend of classical and jazz elements. The piece was premiered at the BBC Proms in 2014 and was later recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra for release on CD. Another notable work by Clowes is her piece "The Fox, the Parakeet, and the Chestnut," which was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta in 2016. The piece is inspired by the fables of Aesop and features a blend of classical and contemporary elements. The piece was premiered at the Southbank Centre in London in 2016 and was later recorded by the London Sinfonietta for release on CD. Clowes' music has been praised for its originality and its ability to blend different musical styles and traditions. She has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the British Composer Award for Jazz Composition in 2018. She continues to be an active composer and performer, and her work is sure to be heard and appreciated by audiences around the world for years to come.
