Black Francis, also known as Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV, is an American musician and composer who is best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the alternative rock band Pixies. Born on April 6, 1965, in Boston, Massachusetts, Francis grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music at a young age. His father was a professor of English literature and his mother was a singer and pianist. Francis began playing guitar and writing songs in his teenage years, and in 1986, he formed Pixies with Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and David Lovering. The band's unique blend of punk, surf rock, and pop influences quickly gained a following, and they released their debut album, "Surfer Rosa," in 1988.
