Nina Shekhar is a young and talented composer of classical music who has been making waves in the music industry with her unique and innovative compositions. Born in 1993 in San Jose, California, Shekhar grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a very young age. Her mother was a pianist and her father was a violinist, and they both encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Shekhar began playing the piano at the age of four and started composing her own music when she was just eight years old. She was also a talented violinist and played in several youth orchestras throughout her childhood. Shekhar attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for her undergraduate degree in composition and continued her studies at the Yale School of Music, where she earned her master's degree in composition. Throughout her career, Shekhar has received numerous awards and accolades for her compositions. In 2019, she was named a finalist for the American Prize in Composition and was also awarded the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award. One of Shekhar's most notable works is her composition "Ice 'n' SPice," which was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic for their 2019 Lunar New Year concert. The piece is a fusion of Western classical music and Indian classical music, reflecting Shekhar's own cultural background. The piece features a solo tabla player, who performs alongside the orchestra, and incorporates elements of Indian rhythms and melodies into the Western classical framework. The piece is a tribute to the natural beauty of the American Southwest and features a solo cello, which represents the vast and open landscape of the region. In addition to her classical compositions, Shekhar has also written music for film and television. She composed the score for the short film "The Last Day of Summer," which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, and has also written music for several television shows, including "The Good Fight" and "The Bold Type."
