Thomas Masella was born on May 12, 1965, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. Masella began playing the piano at the age of four and showed a natural talent for music. He was also exposed to a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, classical, and rock, which would later influence his compositions. Masella attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied composition with Milton Babbitt and Roger Sessions. He also studied piano with Adele Marcus and chamber music with Felix Galimir. During his time at Juilliard, Masella was awarded several prestigious scholarships and awards, including the William Schuman Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Composition. After graduating from Juilliard, Masella began his career as a composer, pianist, and conductor. He quickly gained recognition for his innovative compositions, which blended elements of classical, jazz, and rock music. His works were characterized by their complex harmonies, intricate rhythms, and unconventional instrumentation. One of Masella's early works, "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1990. The piece was praised for its virtuosic piano writing and its inventive use of orchestration. Masella went on to compose several other concertos, including "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra" and "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra," which were also well-received by audiences and critics alike. In addition to his concertos, Masella composed several chamber works, including "String Quartet No. 1" and "Piano Trio No. 2." These pieces showcased Masella's ability to create intricate textures and complex counterpoint, while still maintaining a sense of lyricism and emotional depth. Masella's music was also influenced by his interest in world music. He traveled extensively throughout Asia and Africa, studying traditional music and incorporating elements of these styles into his compositions. This can be heard in works such as "African Rhapsody" and "Chinese Suite," which blend Western classical music with traditional African and Chinese melodies and rhythms. Masella was also an accomplished pianist and conductor. He frequently performed his own works in concert and was known for his dynamic and expressive interpretations. As a conductor, he led several orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Tragically, Masella's career was cut short when he died in a car accident in 2001, at the age of 36. Despite his short career, Masella left behind a legacy of innovative and influential compositions that continue to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world.
