PolandBirth:August 25, 1925 in Warsaw, PolandDeath:September 4, 2014Wlodzimierz Kotonski was a Polish composer who was born on August 23, 1925, in Warsaw, Poland. He was the son of a lawyer and a pianist, and his parents encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Kotonski began studying piano and composition at the State Conservatory in Warsaw when he was just 16 years old. During World War II, Kotonski was forced to interrupt his studies and was sent to a labor camp in Germany. After the war, he returned to Poland and resumed his studies at the State Conservatory. He graduated in 1950 and began working as a composer and music educator. Kotonski's early works were influenced by the neoclassical style of composers like Stravinsky and Hindemith. However, he soon began to experiment with electronic music and became one of the pioneers of this genre in Poland. In the 1960s, he founded the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio, which became a center for electronic music in Poland. Kotonski's most famous works include "Emanacje" (1967), "Muzyka na cztery instrumenty dęte" (1968), and "Klangfarben" (1970). These works are characterized by their use of electronic sounds and unconventional musical structures. Kotonski was also known for his use of aleatoric techniques, which allowed for chance elements in his compositions. In addition to his work as a composer, Kotonski was also a respected music educator. He taught at the State Conservatory in Warsaw and was a professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music. He was also a member of the Polish Composers' Union and the International Society for Contemporary Music. Kotonski's contributions to the field of electronic music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the State Prize of the First Degree in 1975 and the Order of Polonia Restituta in 1985. He was also a recipient of the French Order of Arts and Letters. Kotonski continued to compose and teach until his death on September 28, 2014, at the age of 89. He left behind a legacy of innovative and groundbreaking music that continues to inspire composers and musicians around the world.More....
