Robert Planquette was a French composer of operettas and light music, born on July 31, 1848, in Paris, France. He was the son of a piano maker and showed an early interest in music. At the age of 14, he entered the Paris Conservatory, where he studied composition with Ambroise Thomas and harmony with Antoine Marmontel. Planquette's first major success came in 1876 with his operetta "Les Cloches de Corneville" (The Bells of Corneville), which premiered at the Théâtre des Folies-Dramatiques in Paris. The operetta was an instant hit and became one of the most popular works of its time, with productions staged all over Europe and the United States. The catchy tunes and lively dances of "Les Cloches de Corneville" made it a favorite of audiences and critics alike. Following the success of "Les Cloches de Corneville," Planquette went on to compose a series of operettas, including "Rip Van Winkle" (1882), "Le Chevalier Gaston" (1883), "La Cantinière" (1885), and "Surcouf" (1887). These works were also well-received and helped establish Planquette as one of the leading composers of his time. Planquette's music was characterized by its lightness and charm, with catchy melodies and lively rhythms. He was particularly skilled at writing waltzes and other dance music, which were a staple of the operetta genre. His music was also notable for its use of orchestration, with colorful and inventive arrangements that added to the overall effect of his works. In addition to his work as a composer, Planquette was also a conductor and music director. He served as the conductor of the Théâtre des Folies-Dramatiques from 1887 to 1894 and later worked as the music director of the Théâtre de la Gaîté in Paris. He was also a member of the Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques, a professional organization for composers and authors of dramatic works. Despite his success as a composer, Planquette's later years were marked by financial difficulties and declining health. He died on January 28, 1903, at the age of 54, leaving behind a legacy of popular and enduring works that continue to be performed and enjoyed to this day. In conclusion, Robert Planquette was a talented and influential composer of operettas and light music in the late 19th century.
