Walther Schneiderhan was a renowned classical music artist who was born on August 28, 1915, in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. He was a violinist and conductor who made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Schneiderhan was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He began playing the violin at a young age and showed exceptional talent. Schneiderhan's musical education began at the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied under the tutelage of Franz Samohyl. He later continued his studies with Julius Winkler and Carl Flesch. Schneiderhan's talent was recognized early on, and he won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious International Violin Competition in Vienna in 1933. In 1937, Schneiderhan joined the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as a concertmaster, a position he held until 1945. During this time, he also performed as a soloist with various orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Schneiderhan's performances were highly acclaimed, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest violinists of his time. After World War II, Schneiderhan continued to perform as a soloist and conductor. He was appointed the concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1947, a position he held until 1951. During this time, he also performed as a soloist with the orchestra, and his performances were highly praised. In 1951, Schneiderhan was appointed the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1969. He also served as the conductor of the orchestra from 1960 to 1964. Schneiderhan's tenure with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was marked by several notable performances, including the orchestra's first tour of the United States in 1956. Schneiderhan was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded many of the great works of the classical repertoire. His recordings of the violin concertos of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mozart are considered some of the finest ever made. He also recorded the complete works of Bach for solo violin, a monumental achievement that cemented his reputation as one of the greatest violinists of his time. In addition to his work as a performer and conductor, Schneiderhan was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Salzburg Mozarteum and the Vienna Music Academy, and his students included some of the finest violinists of the next generation. Schneiderhan's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria in 1965 and was made an honorary member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1977. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1985. Schneiderhan continued to perform and record well into his later years. He gave his last concert in 1999, at the age of 84, and passed away on May 18, 2000, in Vienna, Austria. His legacy as one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he taught and inspired.
