Born on August 23, 1928, in London, England, Blyth showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he received a diploma in composition and a teaching certificate. Blyth's career in music began in the 1950s, when he worked as a music teacher in various schools in London. He also served as a conductor for several amateur orchestras and choirs, including the London Choral Society and the London Symphony Orchestra. In 1957, Blyth was appointed as the conductor of the newly formed London Youth Choir, a position he held for over 20 years. During his tenure as the conductor of the London Youth Choir, Blyth led the choir in numerous performances both in the UK and abroad. He also commissioned several new works for the choir, including pieces by composers such as Benjamin Britten and Michael Tippett. In recognition of his contributions to music education, Blyth was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 1978. In addition to his work with the London Youth Choir, Blyth was also a prolific composer. He wrote music for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, choirs, and chamber groups. His compositions were often inspired by his travels, and he drew on a wide range of musical influences, from traditional English folk music to the works of contemporary composers. One of Blyth's most notable compositions is his "Concerto for Orchestra," which was premiered by the London Symphony Orchestra in 1965.
