Artist Info
Janis McKay was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Janis showed a natural talent for music, and her parents encouraged her to pursue it. Janis began her musical education at the age of four, when she started taking piano lessons with her mother. She quickly progressed and by the age of eight, she had already won her first piano competition. Her parents then decided to enroll her in the Juilliard School, where she studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist, Martha Argerich. During her time at Juilliard, Janis continued to excel, winning numerous competitions and awards. In 2003, she won the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which launched her career as a professional musician. Janis made her debut with the New York Philharmonic in 2004, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. The performance was a huge success, and Janis received critical acclaim for her virtuosic playing and musicality. She went on to perform with many other major orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her performances with orchestras, Janis also gave numerous solo recitals around the world. She was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Chopin and Liszt, and her performances of their music were often described as "spellbinding" and "mesmerizing." Janis was also a prolific recording artist, having released over 20 albums throughout her career. Her recordings of Chopin's complete works for piano and Liszt's Transcendental Etudes were particularly well-received, and won her several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo in 2010. Despite her success, Janis remained humble and dedicated to her craft. She continued to practice for hours every day, and was known for her meticulous attention to detail in her performances. She also gave back to the musical community, teaching masterclasses and mentoring young musicians. Tragically, Janis's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2015. She underwent treatment, but unfortunately, the cancer was too advanced, and she passed away on June 15, 2016, at the age of 31. Janis's legacy as a musician lives on, however, through her recordings and the countless musicians she inspired. She will always be remembered as one of the greatest pianists of her generation, and a true artist who dedicated her life to the pursuit of musical excellence.More....
