Artist Info
Jennifer Curtis is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a violinist, improviser, and collaborator. Born in Durham, North Carolina, in 1979, Curtis grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a composer and conductor, so it was only natural that Curtis would follow in their footsteps. Curtis began playing the violin at the age of three and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with renowned teachers such as Sally Thomas and Robert Mann and went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School in New York City. Throughout her career, Curtis has been recognized for her exceptional talent and has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2005, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding instrumentalists who show great potential for a major career in classical music. She was also a winner of the Astral Artists National Auditions and was named a TED Fellow in 2018. Curtis has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with many renowned musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and the Kronos Quartet. One of Curtis's most notable performances was her solo violin performance of J.S. Bach's complete Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. She performed this monumental work in a single evening, which is a feat that few violinists have attempted. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and Curtis was praised for her technical skill and emotional depth. In addition to her work as a classical violinist, Curtis is also known for her improvisational skills. She has collaborated with jazz musicians and has performed in improvisational settings, demonstrating her versatility and creativity as a musician. Curtis is also a passionate advocate for music education and has worked with young musicians through various programs and initiatives. She has served as a faculty member at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and has taught at numerous music festivals and workshops. In recent years, Curtis has continued to push the boundaries of classical music and has explored new ways of presenting and performing music. She has collaborated with dancers, visual artists, and poets, creating multimedia performances that blend different art forms and genres. Overall, Jennifer Curtis is a remarkable musician who has made a significant impact on the classical music world.
