Xunfa Yu was a Chinese composer of classical music who was born on December 12, 1938, in the city of Shanghai. He was the youngest of six children in his family, and his parents were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Xunfa Yu was exposed to music and began to show a talent for it. Xunfa Yu began his formal music education at the age of six when he started to learn the piano. He later studied composition at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he was taught by some of the most prominent composers of the time. He graduated in 1962 and went on to become a professor at the conservatory. Xunfa Yu's music is characterized by its use of traditional Chinese musical elements, such as pentatonic scales and Chinese instruments. He was also influenced by Western classical music, particularly the works of Bach and Beethoven. His compositions often combine these two musical traditions, creating a unique sound that is both familiar and new. One of Xunfa Yu's most famous works is his Symphony No. 1, which was composed in 1979. The symphony is divided into four movements, each of which is based on a different Chinese folk song. The first movement is based on the song "Jasmine Flower," the second on "The Moon Over a Fountain," the third on "The Red Plum Blossoms," and the fourth on "The Great Wall." Another notable work by Xunfa Yu is his opera "The White-Haired Girl," which was composed in 1980. The opera tells the story of a young girl who is forced to work as a slave by a wealthy landlord. She eventually escapes and becomes a revolutionary hero. The opera was a huge success in China and has been performed all over the world. Xunfa Yu's music has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1983, he was awarded the National Prize for Art and Literature, the highest honor for artists in China. He was also a member of the Chinese Musicians Association and the Chinese National Committee of the International Society for Contemporary Music. Xunfa Yu continued to compose music until his death on December 28, 1992, at the age of 54. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.
