Jeffes began his musical education at an early age, studying piano and violin as a child. He later attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition and orchestration. During his time at the academy, Jeffes became interested in experimental music and began to explore new ways of creating and performing music. In 1972, Jeffes formed the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, a group that blended elements of classical, folk, and world music to create a unique and eclectic sound. The group's name was inspired by a cafe in Paris that Jeffes had visited, which had a sign outside that read "Penguin Cafe." The group's first album, "Music from the Penguin Cafe," was released in 1976 and was well-received by critics and audiences alike. Over the next two decades, the Penguin Cafe Orchestra released a series of albums that showcased Jeffes' innovative approach to music. The group's music was characterized by its use of unusual instruments, such as the ukulele, mandolin, and harmonium, as well as its incorporation of elements of jazz, rock, and world music. One of the highlights of Jeffes' career was the release of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra's fourth album, "Signs of Life," in 1987. The album featured the hit single "Perpetuum Mobile," which became a popular tune in the UK and was used in a number of films and television shows. In addition to his work with the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Jeffes also composed music for film and television. He wrote the score for the 1983 film "The Emerald Forest," as well as the theme music for the BBC television series "The South Bank Show." Tragically, Jeffes passed away in 1997 at the age of 48 after a battle with brain cancer.
