Role:ComposerBirth:1954Death:2017Period:ContemporaryGenre:ChamberPhilip Houghton was a renowned Australian classical music composer, born on June 22, 1954, in Sydney, Australia. He was the son of a jazz pianist and a classical pianist, which exposed him to a wide range of musical styles from an early age. Houghton began playing the guitar at the age of 12 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. Houghton's early musical education was primarily self-taught, as he was unable to find a guitar teacher who could teach him the style of music he was interested in. He spent countless hours listening to recordings of classical guitarists and studying their techniques. Houghton's dedication to his craft paid off, and he quickly became one of Australia's most accomplished classical guitarists. In addition to his skills as a performer, Houghton was also a gifted composer. He began composing music for the guitar in his early 20s and quickly gained recognition for his unique style. Houghton's compositions were heavily influenced by his love of jazz and his interest in world music. He often incorporated elements of these styles into his classical compositions, creating a sound that was both innovative and accessible. Houghton's first major composition was his "Stélé" suite, which he composed in 1981. The suite was inspired by the ancient Egyptian art form of the same name and featured a series of short pieces that were designed to be played as a continuous whole. The suite was well-received by critics and helped establish Houghton as a major force in the world of classical guitar. Over the next few years, Houghton continued to compose music for the guitar, including his "Opals" suite, which was inspired by the gemstones found in his native Australia. The suite was a critical and commercial success and helped establish Houghton as one of the world's leading classical guitar composers. In addition to his work as a composer, Houghton was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at several universities and music schools throughout Australia and was known for his ability to inspire and motivate his students. Many of his former students have gone on to become successful musicians in their own right. Houghton's most famous composition is his "Kinkachoo, I Love You" suite, which he composed in 1991. The suite was inspired by the poetry of Australian writer Dorothy Porter and featured a series of short pieces that were designed to be played as a continuous whole. The suite was a critical and commercial success and helped establish Houghton as one of the world's leading classical guitar composers. Houghton continued to compose music for the guitar throughout his career, including his "The Light on the Edge" suite, which was inspired by the landscapes of Australia's Northern Territory. The suite was a critical and commercial success and helped establish Houghton as one of the world's leading classical guitar composers. Houghton's career was tragically cut short when he passed away on October 30, 2017, at the age of 63. His contributions to the world of classical guitar and music composition will be remembered for generations to come.More....
