The Georgia Southern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over four decades. The ensemble was founded in 1974 by Dr. John Carmichael, who served as the director of bands at Georgia Southern University from 1973 to 1998. The ensemble was initially formed as a small group of musicians who played at university events and local concerts. However, over the years, it has grown into a full-fledged symphonic wind ensemble that has performed at various prestigious venues across the United States. The ensemble comprises some of the most talented musicians from the Georgia Southern University School of Music. The members of the ensemble are selected through a rigorous audition process, and only the best musicians are chosen to be a part of this elite group. The ensemble is led by Dr. Colin McKenzie, who has been the director of bands at Georgia Southern University since 2015. Dr. McKenzie is a highly accomplished musician and conductor who has led numerous ensembles to great success. Over the years, the Georgia Southern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble has performed at various prestigious venues across the United States. Some of the highlights of their major performances include their appearance at the 2018 Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference, where they performed a program of contemporary wind band music. The ensemble has also performed at the 2017 National Association for Music Education All-National Honor Ensembles, where they were one of only two university wind ensembles selected to perform. In addition to their major performances, the Georgia Southern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2019, the ensemble was selected to perform at the College Band Directors National Association Southern Division Conference, where they received a standing ovation for their performance. The ensemble has also won several awards at the Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluation, including superior ratings in both concert and sight-reading categories. The Georgia Southern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble is known for its diverse repertoire, which includes both traditional and contemporary wind band music. The ensemble has performed works by some of the most renowned composers in the classical music world, including John Williams, Gustav Holst, and Percy Grainger.
