He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor and composer. Kupkovic began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and violin. He later attended the Bratislava Conservatory, where he studied composition with Alexander Moyzes. After completing his studies, Kupkovic began working as a composer and conductor. He was appointed as the conductor of the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1962, a position he held for over a decade. During this time, he also worked as a composer, writing music for a variety of ensembles and genres. Kupkovic's music is characterized by its use of traditional Slovakian folk melodies and rhythms, as well as its incorporation of modernist techniques. His works often feature complex harmonies and rhythms, as well as unconventional instrumentation.
