Alexander Suleiman is a renowned cellist and classical music artist who has made a name for himself in the world of music. Born in 1980 in Munich, Germany, Suleiman grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, so it was only natural that he would develop an interest in music from a young age. Suleiman began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. During his studies, he was mentored by some of the most renowned cellists of our time, including Yo-Yo Ma, Bernard Greenhouse, and David Geringas. Suleiman's career as a professional cellist began in 2002 when he won the prestigious International Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki, Finland. This win catapulted him into the international spotlight and opened up many doors for him. He has since performed in some of the world's most renowned concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall. One of Suleiman's most notable performances was his solo debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2005. He performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, and the performance was met with critical acclaim. The Berliner Zeitung praised Suleiman's "soulful and virtuosic playing," and the Berliner Morgenpost called him a "rising star of the cello world." Suleiman has also collaborated with many other renowned musicians, including pianist Lang Lang, violinist Maxim Vengerov, and conductor Zubin Mehta. He has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Suleiman is also a passionate chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet, the Guarneri Quartet, and the Tokyo String Quartet. He is a founding member of the Trio Gaon, a piano trio that has won critical acclaim for their innovative and dynamic performances. Suleiman's recordings have also received critical acclaim. His recording of the complete Bach Cello Suites was praised by Gramophone magazine as "a performance of great depth and insight." His recording of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 with the London Symphony Orchestra was also highly praised, with The Guardian calling it "a performance of great intensity and emotional power." In addition to his performing career, Suleiman is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. He is currently a professor of cello at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Suleiman has received many awards and honors throughout his career. In addition to his win at the International Paulo Cello Competition, he has also won the Leonard Rose International Cello Competition and the Gaspar Cassado International Cello Competition. He was awarded the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in 2006, which recognizes outstanding young musicians and provides them with financial support and career development opportunities.
