Michael Gandolfi is an American composer who was born on March 31, 1956, in Melrose, Massachusetts. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a singer. Gandolfi began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the guitar and bass. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied composition and jazz performance. After graduating from Berklee, Gandolfi continued his studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Master of Music degree in composition. He also studied with the renowned composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His compositions often incorporate elements of jazz, rock, and other popular music genres, as well as traditional classical forms and techniques. One of Gandolfi's most notable works is his "Chesapeake: Summer of 1814," a symphony that tells the story of the War of 1812 and the Battle of Baltimore. The piece was commissioned by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2014, on the 200th anniversary of the battle. The symphony features a mix of classical and popular music styles, including marches, sea shanties, and patriotic songs. Another notable work by Gandolfi is his "The Garden of Cosmic Speculation," a suite of orchestral pieces inspired by the garden of the same name in Scotland. The garden was designed by the landscape architect Charles Jencks and features sculptures and other artworks inspired by science and mathematics. Gandolfi's suite captures the whimsical and imaginative spirit of the garden, with movements titled "Fractal Terrace," "The Universe Cascade," and "The Quark Walk." Gandolfi has also composed several works for chamber ensembles, including his "Plain Song, Fantastic Dances" for string quartet and his "Line Drawings" for clarinet, violin, and piano. These pieces showcase his skill at blending different musical styles and creating complex and intricate textures. In addition to his work as a composer, Gandolfi is also a professor of composition at the New England Conservatory of Music. He has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fromm Foundation commission. His music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo String Quartet.
