Born on October 20, 1937, in Livorno, Italy, Ghiglia grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Ghiglia started playing the guitar at the age of 11 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. Ghiglia's early musical education was under the guidance of his father, who taught him the basics of music theory and guitar technique. He later studied with the renowned guitarist Andrés Segovia in Siena, Italy, and with Oscar Ghiglia, his cousin, in Rome. Ghiglia's training with Segovia was a turning point in his career, as it exposed him to the world of classical guitar and inspired him to pursue a career as a professional musician. In 1960, Ghiglia made his debut as a soloist in Rome, performing works by Bach, Sor, and Giuliani. He quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic playing and musical sensitivity, and his career took off. Ghiglia went on to perform in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In addition to his performing career, Ghiglia has been a dedicated music educator. He has taught at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world, including the Juilliard School in New York, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. He has also written several influential books on guitar technique and interpretation, including "Classical Guitar Technique: Essential Exercises, Scales, and Arpeggios" and "Interpretation of the Guitar Music of the 20th Century."
