Yung-Hsin Chang is a Taiwanese classical pianist who has gained international recognition for her virtuosic performances and musical interpretations. Born on December 22, 1985, in Taipei, Taiwan, Chang showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Her parents, both music teachers, recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Chang's musical education began at the age of six when she enrolled in the Yamaha Music School in Taipei. She quickly progressed through the program and began studying with renowned piano teacher, Professor Ching-Yun Hu, at the age of nine. Under Hu's guidance, Chang developed her technical skills and musicality, and began competing in national and international piano competitions. In 2001, Chang won first prize in the Taiwan National Piano Competition, and in 2002, she was awarded the top prize in the Asia-Pacific Piano Competition. These early successes propelled Chang onto the international stage, and she began performing in concerts and festivals around the world. Chang's breakthrough performance came in 2005 when she won the prestigious Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Tel Aviv, Israel. Her performance of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor impressed the judges and audience alike, and she was awarded first prize, along with a cash prize of $30,000 and a recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon. Following her victory at the Rubinstein Competition, Chang's career took off. She was invited to perform with major orchestras around the world, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She also made her debut at Carnegie Hall in 2006, performing a solo recital to critical acclaim. Chang's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works by classical composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart, as well as more contemporary composers such as Ligeti and Messiaen. She is particularly known for her interpretations of Chopin, and has recorded several albums of his works, including a critically acclaimed recording of his complete Nocturnes. In addition to her performing career, Chang is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught masterclasses at universities and conservatories around the world, and is currently a professor of piano at the Juilliard School in New York City. Chang's numerous awards and accolades include the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Gilmore Young Artist Award, and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. She has also been named a Steinway Artist, and has been featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times and Gramophone magazine. Despite her success, Chang remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to practice for several hours a day, and is constantly seeking to improve her technique and musicality. Her passion for music and her commitment to excellence have made her one of the most respected and admired pianists of her generation.
