Role:ConductorJindong Cai is a renowned conductor, scholar, and educator in the field of classical music. Born in China in 1962, Cai grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. He began studying the violin at the age of six and later went on to study conducting at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. After completing his studies, Cai worked as a conductor with several orchestras in China, including the China National Symphony Orchestra and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. He also served as the music director of the Central Opera House in Beijing, where he conducted numerous productions of both Western and Chinese operas. In 1991, Cai moved to the United States to pursue further studies in conducting at the University of Texas at Austin. He later earned a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Michigan, where he focused on the study of Chinese music and its relationship to Western classical music. Throughout his career, Cai has been a strong advocate for the promotion and preservation of Chinese music. He has conducted numerous performances of Chinese orchestral works, including the Yellow River Concerto and the Butterfly Lovers Concerto, both of which have become popular staples of the classical music repertoire. Cai has also been a champion of contemporary music, commissioning and conducting new works by composers such as Chen Yi, Zhou Long, and Tan Dun. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Lang Lang, and Joshua Bell. In addition to his work as a conductor, Cai is also a respected scholar and educator. He has published several books and articles on Chinese music and culture, including the acclaimed book "Rhapsody in Red: How Western Classical Music Became Chinese." He has also taught at several universities, including Stanford University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Cai's many achievements have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2009, he was awarded the Friendship Award by the Chinese government for his contributions to the promotion of Chinese culture. He has also received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Michigan and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Texas at Austin.
