The founding members of proMODERN were violinist and artistic director, Maria Radutu, cellist, Florian Eggner, and pianist, Eduard Kutrowatz. The ensemble has since expanded to include a rotating cast of musicians, depending on the repertoire being performed. proMODERN's mission is to promote contemporary classical music and to bring it to a wider audience. The ensemble achieves this by performing works by living composers, as well as by commissioning new works from emerging composers. One of the highlights of proMODERN's early career was their performance at the 2010 Salzburg Festival, where they premiered a new work by Austrian composer, Johannes Maria Staud. The performance was well-received by both audiences and critics, and helped to establish proMODERN as a leading ensemble in the contemporary classical music scene. Since then, proMODERN has gone on to perform at major festivals and concert halls around the world, including the Lucerne Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and Carnegie Hall in New York City. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of renowned composers, including György Kurtág, Wolfgang Rihm, and Sofia Gubaidulina. In addition to their performances, proMODERN is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and has developed a program called "proMODERN for Kids," which introduces children to contemporary classical music in a fun and engaging way. proMODERN has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. In 2012, the ensemble won the Echo Klassik award for their album, "Kurtág: Kafka Fragments," which featured the music of György Kurtág. The album was praised for its "intense and emotional" performances, and helped to bring Kurtág's music to a wider audience. In 2016, proMODERN was awarded the Austrian Music Prize, which is the highest honor for music in Austria. The ensemble was recognized for their "outstanding contributions to the promotion and performance of contemporary classical music."
