United KingdomBirth:ca. 1485Death:November, 1549Period:RenaissanceRichard Pygott was a prominent English composer of the Renaissance era, born in the early 15th century. Not much is known about his early life, but it is believed that he was born in the town of Lincolnshire, England. Pygott was a member of the Chapel Royal, which was the official choir of the English monarchs. He was also a member of the choir at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. Pygott's musical career began in the early 1460s, when he was appointed as a singer in the Chapel Royal. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in 1474. This was a prestigious position that allowed him to compose music for the royal court and perform for the monarchs. Pygott's most famous work is his Mass "Missa Veni Sancte Spiritus," which was composed in the late 15th century. This Mass is considered to be one of the finest examples of English Renaissance polyphony. It is a six-part Mass that is based on the Gregorian chant "Veni Sancte Spiritus." The Mass is known for its intricate harmonies and complex counterpoint. Pygott's other works include motets, hymns, and secular songs. His motets are particularly noteworthy for their use of complex rhythms and harmonies. One of his most famous motets is "Salve Regina," which is a four-part motet that is based on the Marian antiphon of the same name. Pygott's music was highly regarded during his lifetime and continued to be performed long after his death. His Mass "Missa Veni Sancte Spiritus" was still being performed in the 16th century, and his motets were included in many collections of music during the Renaissance. Pygott's influence on English Renaissance music cannot be overstated. His use of complex harmonies and counterpoint paved the way for future composers, and his music continues to be studied and performed today.More....
