Sokkelund Chorus is a Danish classical music choir that has been active since 1963. The choir was founded by conductor and composer Flemming Weis, who served as its artistic director until 2001. Since then, the choir has been led by conductor Morten Schuldt-Jensen. The Sokkelund Chorus takes its name from the Sokkelund district of Copenhagen, where it was originally based. The choir has a long history of performing a wide range of classical music, including works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and many others. Over the years, the choir has become known for its high level of musical excellence and its commitment to performing challenging and innovative repertoire. One of the highlights of the Sokkelund Chorus's early years was its performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 1966. This was a major undertaking for the choir, as the work is one of the most complex and demanding pieces in the choral repertoire. However, the choir rose to the challenge and delivered a powerful and moving performance that was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. In the years that followed, the Sokkelund Chorus continued to build its reputation as one of Denmark's leading classical music ensembles. One of the most notable performances in the Sokkelund Chorus's history took place in 1999, when the choir performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. The performance was a huge success, and it cemented the Sokkelund Chorus's reputation as one of Denmark's premier classical music ensembles. In 1993, the choir was awarded the prestigious Carl Nielsen Prize, which is given annually to outstanding Danish musicians. The choir has also been recognized for its contributions to Danish cultural life by the Danish Ministry of Culture and the Danish Arts Foundation. Today, the Sokkelund Chorus continues to be one of Denmark's most respected and beloved classical music ensembles.
