Brinton Averil Smith is a renowned cellist who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born on October 29, 1968, in Loma Linda, California, Smith grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a violinist. Smith started playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Smith's family moved to Houston, Texas, when he was ten years old, and he continued his musical education there. He studied with renowned cellist Lev Aronson at the University of Houston and later with Lynn Harrell at the University of Southern California. Smith also attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Harvey Shapiro. Smith's talent as a cellist was evident from an early age, and he quickly began to make a name for himself in the classical music world. He won numerous competitions, including the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Competition and the Naumburg International Cello Competition. He also performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Houston Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Smith's career was his performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Houston Symphony in 2005. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted Smith's "rich, warm tone" and "impeccable technique." Smith has also performed with many of the world's leading conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Christoph Eschenbach, and Leonard Slatkin. In addition to his work as a soloist, Smith is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He is also a founding member of the Houston-based Da Camera chamber music ensemble. Smith has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2000, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a career in classical music. He has also been awarded the top prize at the Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition and the William Primrose International Viola Competition. Smith is also a dedicated teacher and has taught at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and the University of Houston. He is currently the principal cellist of the Houston Symphony and a professor of cello at the Shepherd School of Music. In addition to his work as a musician and teacher, Smith is also a philanthropist. He is the founder of the Brinton Averil Smith Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to young musicians who are pursuing a career in classical music.
