In 1906, he wrote his first hit song, "O surdato 'nnammurato," which became a popular anthem for Italian soldiers during World War I. Bovio's success as a composer continued throughout the early 20th century. He wrote music for a number of popular Italian singers, including Enrico Caruso and Tito Schipa. He also wrote music for the theater and collaborated with some of the most famous playwrights of his time. One of Bovio's most famous works is the song "Funiculì, Funiculà," which he wrote in 1880 with composer Luigi Denza.
