She was born on August 22, 1952, in New York City, United States. Her parents were both musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue music from a young age. She started playing the piano when she was just four years old and showed a natural talent for the instrument. Schiff's parents recognized her potential and enrolled her in the Juilliard School of Music in New York City when she was just six years old. She studied under some of the most renowned piano teachers of the time, including Rosina Lhevinne and Adele Marcus. Schiff's talent and dedication to music were evident from a young age, and she quickly became a rising star in the classical music world. Schiff's first major performance was at the age of 12 when she played Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and it marked the beginning of Schiff's career as a professional musician. She continued to perform with various orchestras and at music festivals throughout her teenage years, gaining a reputation as a talented and accomplished pianist. In 1970, Schiff graduated from the Juilliard School of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree. She then went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she received a Master of Music degree in 1972. During her time at Curtis, Schiff studied under the renowned pianist Rudolf Serkin, who had a significant influence on her musical style and technique. After completing her studies, Schiff embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist. She performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She also performed at major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the Tanglewood Music Festival. Schiff's repertoire was extensive, and she was known for her interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. She was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by several contemporary composers, including John Corigliano and George Perle. In addition to her performances, Schiff was also a respected music educator. She taught at the Juilliard School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music, passing on her knowledge and expertise to the next generation of musicians. Throughout her career, Schiff received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the world of music. In 1976, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians.
